Albany Herald: Gubernatorial Candidate Pushes Issues
ALBANY - As the sun sets on Gov. Sonny Perdue's time in office, there are a number of front-runners hoping to take his place in 2010. Eric Johnson, R-Savannah, is one of them. In recent weeks he has been throughout the state to promote his campaign, including a stop to the Good Life City on Thursday. When asked what got him into the governor's race, he referred to his roughly 17 years of experience as a legislator. "I became increasing concerned," Johnson said. "The water, education, traffic issues should have been taken care of 30-40 years ago. I can draw the blueprints to get us there. I'm ready to head the state." One issue the candidate has not forgotten about is the economy. From Johnson's perspective, the answer on a state level will be to "turn people into small business successes." "While most of the economic situation is going on in Washington, as the economy moves into the 21st century, we will have to do a good job of being more flexible," he said. More...

Eric Johnson's Campaign Statement Regarding Roy Barnes
Republican State Senator Eric Johnson's gubernatorial campaign today welcomed Roy Barnes' attempt to become the Democrat nominee. Ben Fry, Johnson's Campaign Manager, issued the following statement: "Roy Barnes is a formidable opponent, and his entry into the race only emphasizes the need for Republicans to nominate the candidate best able to appeal to voters across the state in the General Election. Eric Johnson is the right man for the job because he is tested, proven, and ready to lead. Eric was instrumental in giving Georgians a choice between principled conservative policies and the heavy handed mandates of the Barnes administration. He has gone toe to toe with the Barnes machine in the past and is confident that voters will make the same decision they did in 2002 when they trusted Eric and his colleagues to govern Georgia." Trust is Key for Conservatives
Essential to success is mutual trust. Politicians have to trust voters and stop playing “no is yes” and “tax is fee” and “crisis is our chance to control your life” games. State Sen. Eric Johnson of Savannah promised a campaign built on trust: “Who do you trust with our principles … Who do you trust to do the right thing when nobody is looking?” He expounded on his beliefs and promised “to focus on the next generation — not the next headline or the next election.” Continuing: “As a person, I serve a higher God. I am accountable to Him. “As a public servant, I serve the Constitution. That holds me accountable to you.” Core principles. Trust. Teach and outreach. That wins Georgia — and the country. More...

Eric's Speech to 2009 Republican State Convention
This campaign is about TRUST. Who do you trust with our principles? Who do you trust to make the tough calls? Who do you trust with complex issues? Who do you trust to do the right thing when nobody is looking? As the leader of the Senate, I went to work. Unlike Washington, we balanced our budgets and cut taxes. We ended frivolous lawsuits And protected private property rights. We required a photo ID to vote And passed the toughest illegal immigration laws in the nation. We passed pro-life legislation that has reduced abortions in Georgia And protected your right to keep and bear arms and hunt and fish. We have expanded school choice And allowed the Bible to be taught in public schools. I know WHO we are, WHERE we came from, and WHAT we believe in. I have never wavered! I do NOT want to turn back – or be turned back. And THAT is why I am running for Governor. Our great state was built by men and women who struggled with less education, less wealth, poorer health, and worse pollution than we have. They didn't ask for bailouts or new government programs. They simply worked harder, tightened their belts, did without, and focused on their children and not themselves. Like them, I want to focus on the next generation – not the next headline or the next election. My name is Eric Johnson …. And I want to be your next Governor. More...

Voucher program use may expand
ATLANTA- The parents of nearly 1,600 students with handicaps used taxpayer funds to cover tuition at private schools this year as part of a program designed to give them a choice in how their children are educated. The program grew 44 percent over last year, its first. Its sponsor, Sen. Eric Johnson, R-Savannah, has introduced legislation to expand eligibility to all students. More...
